Reela's Biggest Obstacles Empty
PostSubject: Reela's Biggest Obstacles   Reela's Biggest Obstacles EmptyFri Apr 17, 2009 11:06 pm

To be honest, Both of them made it hard on themselves on getting together.

However several others made it hard.

Tony Gates.
Katey.
Michael(I was never a fan of them)
Simon

Oh yeah and the constant interuptions! Mad

Any other problem I forgot to point out?

So, on the topic of Katey, Her and Neela were okay in the begining, until Katey went for Ray and as Ray's feelings deepened for Neela, Katey could see that, lol. I just don't get why Katey is such a bitch to neela, she didnt do anything to her, except for being friends with ray and apparently that drove her nuts...i still didnt get why she called neela a selfish bitch.....

gates.i still didnt get why he tried to interfer with those two, in the fight at the luby wedding, he said that him and neela are finished over done etc, what was he so afraid of? He seemed very threatened over those two lol...is it just me? i just always got the impression he enjoyed rubbing his little fling with neela in ray's face.....

simon....ehh, he really pissed me off in haunted, get a clue....but since ray was gone, he couldnt exactly try to rub it in ray's face, however im sure brenner knew of their connection and they still remained close after his visit....still, to me, simon was all about hitting it with neela but then the writers had him like her just to stick it to reela fans, ugh...however....overall, i think gates was the biggest problem regarding a guy, brenner didnt have that chance to stick it to ray...brenner's face when he saw neela and ray together in that video chat says it all, he KNEW that.

Reela's Biggest Obstacles Empty
PostSubject: Re: Reela's Biggest Obstacles   Reela's Biggest Obstacles EmptyMon Apr 20, 2009 5:10 pm

If I had to compare Gates and Brenner, I'd say Gates was way more culpable in the delay re our Roomies' happy ending.

However you feel about Brenner or his personal issues, he had no clue about Ray or the Reela history when he started pursuing Neela. Even when Neela introduced him to Ray and later when Simon apologized for interrupting them during Haunted, Neela only said Ray was a good friend. (I'm not blaming Neela; she doesn't need to give out details re her painful personal history). But Simon was pursuing someone he thought was single. (The bigger question re Simon is what made him fall for Neela, when he was such a womanizer in the beginning. Is it because she's on the same level with him professionally, and was indifferent to him in the beginning (as opposed to falling for his charms)? He could manipulate the others, but not her. In keeping with his character, he should have gotten bored after their first tryst and moved on to the next challenge. So I blame that whole storyline on rushed writing to create a season 14 finale cliffhanger and rehabilitate him before series's end.

Gates, however. Ugh! I get his character, but he totally screwed with the Roomies in S.13. He knew how Ray felt about her. He knew there was something there. For Gates, it was less about liking Neela than it was about winning against Ray. Even after Neela had broken it off with him in I Don't, he still taunted Ray about it in the bar scene. It irritates me no end even now!! Gates totally messed with his head. And then he's serious about Sam. Whatever!

Katey, I can't even discuss her without feeling like I'm going to break out in hives. How someone who was a student (or intern) could get away talking the way she did to Neela is beyond me.

Here in lies the biggest problem and most obvious flaw of that entire storyline. It not only was contrived and unrealistic, but it also diverged totally from the original storyline of Simon Brenner. This is what made it impossible for me to have any emotional investment into the character of Brenner. He was used as a plot device and his miraculous transformation was done at the speed of light in order to facilitate him being a plot device. It was obvious they wanted a love interest for Neela(the price Roomie fans had to pay for an absent Shane West), and by hook or crook, TPTB were determined to give us one.

PostSubject: Re: Reela's Biggest Obstacles   Reela's Biggest Obstacles EmptyMon Apr 20, 2009 8:20 pm

Yeah, you're right, the more I think about it, Gates was probably the biggest issue between the roomies, Katey was a real bitch to Neela and she didnt do anything to her, she was nothing but nice to her until neela had no choice to tell her off. Simon wasnt a problem between the roomies, how could he be? ray was gone but Im sure ray being in neela's life eventually got to simon, his reaction to neela wanting to answer the phone in what we do was interesting..

how gates was in S. 13, oohh, that still ticks me off, he really had no business sticking his nose in something that was none of his concern. I had a chance to tolerate gates after S. 13 but ehh, i still wasnt a huge fan of his.

katey in one word. jealous..lol.she came off as a girl who thought she could get every guy she wanted, only thing she got out of ray was sex, he wasnt emotionally there for her the way she wanted him to be..she KNEW he wanted Neela.

still...i hated simon. no, he wasnt an issue for reela, however he really thought neela was truly single, i think not, she clearly was trying to get over ray and i get why she turned to dating simon.

Reela's Biggest Obstacles Empty
PostSubject: Re: Reela's Biggest Obstacles   Reela's Biggest Obstacles EmptyMon Apr 20, 2009 11:30 pm

i'm not sure if i read it on here or on another site, but someone had posted that David Lyons was originally supposed to be a guest star as opposed to a series regular. So i'm sure that was the huge reason behind Simon's ridiculously accelerated transformation. I think the writers just assumed we would suspend our disbelief, it being tv and all.

I think Gates was just a huge prick. Like what was previously stated, Simon at least tried to apologize for interrupting. Whereas Gates was just terrible, rubbing it in Ray's face and whatnot. Also, while Simon had some sort of weird redemption, Tony never really changed anything about himself. He just changed romantic partners. So i found zero redeeming qualities about him, minus his gentleness with Sam and her situations. Ugh...gates was just an epic fail in my eyes.

It also seemed as though Simon cared about Neela, whereas Tony just wanted to win the competition with Ray for anything - Neela included.

All three of the guys - Ray, Tony and Simon were introduced to the ER with some similarities: womanizers and cocky-know-it-alls and they were willing to take chances with both things - love/sex and medicine. The difference in the end was how Ray let Neela change him into the man that we all love today. Tony and Simon weren't ready for that.

I agree but Neela marrying Gallant- that was nail in the coffin which kind of stopped it to begin with. I liked Gallant but their whole marriage was so out of the blue and impulsive. If she was not married to him she would never of even moved out of Ray's. They both rushed into that. Then his death and her guilt over all of that was terrible. Them to not living with one another and G death and Tony really put a distance for a while with the roomies. Tony was an obstacle but was it a rebound. She was never going to last with any guy that she would of gone with straight after Gallant.
I did warm to Simon's character more than Tony but I did not like him and the whole 'I told you so line' line in that episode.

KG 'I agree but Neela marrying Gallant- that was nail in the coffin which kind of stopped it to begin with'.

Totally agree - and if only bloomin Abby hadnt made Neela send Michael saucy pictures to Iraq. The relationship was kind of undefined if I recall when he left- sure those pics helped add some definition!

I agree... with everything.

Aside from Gallant (who I know as well as his wife did when she married him), Neela does seem to fall for the same type of guy, doesn't she?

Except her with Ray is a thousand times more intriguing and appealing than the other two. (This is where I gush and state the obvs) The fact that Ray was the original has something to do with it. Also, the writers, whether they realize it or not, write better scenes that are Ray/Neela. The chemistry clicks. When we watch them, we don't think device or cliche... we think, "Wow. I hope the show has more of this down the road. This is interesting." And, we think. There's just something about these two characters and their pairing that makes us think about them a lot. Even if reela was a love story, which usually (though in ER's case not usually) end happily, I just never knew what would happen. I was hooked. I cared.

I was reading some fic the other day and the writer had Archie compare the reela saga to Jane Austen. Smile Ah, ER's own little Pride and Prejudice.

KJ - that's a fantastic point about Ray letting Neela change him while the other two men didn't. Never thought of it that way, and I think you're spot on!

Jontinf 'I was reading some fic the other day and the writer had Archie compare the reela saga to Jane Austen. Ah, ER's own little Pride and Prejudice'.

Do you have the link please? I know critics of Pride and Prejudice suggest there's no chemistry between Darcy/Bennett, and ultimately just because there are no explicit love scenes there either. The use of clever dialogue and wit alone without anything more explicit is lost on some folk.

Yup:

It's actually mentioned in a kind of snarky way, but the comparison is there.

Wow. Some folks do not know what chemistry is!
