Neela's Realization
Chapter 2
Neela stood alone in her empty apartment, taking in what just happened. It was all so fast, her mind was reeling. Simon had just left her alone and she wasn't sure she even cared all that much. She suddenly felt tired and made her way to her bedroom and turned on the light. She still had Ray's shirt in her hand, she looked at it and smiled. She removed her blouse and slowly put Ray's shirt over her body. She loved that shirt. She loved how it smelled, how it felt, how it reminded her of Ray.
She got into bed and slowly drifted off to sleep. She kept dreaming about Ray. When they first met, when they became roomates, him calling her roomie. Then her dreams took a different turn. She dreamt about his lips on hers, his chest, his arms around her, slow dancing, and him making love to her. And then Neela woke up; heart pounding, sweating, and chest heaving.
She heard a knock at the door. She got up and answered it, it was Simon.
Neela: What are you doing here?
Simon: Nice to see you too.
Neela: Sorry. Come in.
Simon: I'm on in an hour. I can't stay long.
Neela: Simon, I was going to tell you last night that I decided to take that job at Duke.
Simon: What?
Neela: I took the job. I'm moving to North Carolina. County isn't my future.
Simon: What about us?
Neela: I don't belong here anymore.
Simon: What you mean is, you don't belong with me.
Neela: I can't stay here for you.
Simon: Then I'm coming with you.
Neela is shocked
Neela: This isn't about us Simon, this is about me.
Simon: So County isn't your future and that means I'm not your future either.
Neela: I'm sorry, Simon. I wasn't being fair to you.
Simon: Is this about Ray?
Neela: Partly, but even if it wasn't for Ray we'd still be having this conversation.
Simon: So this is it? It's over?
Neela: Yes.
He leaves.
Neela goes back into her bedroom and gets back into bed. She knew with absolute certainty that she had made the right choice. She laid there for a while and noticed that her phone was beeping. Ray was texting her:
Ray: Hey. How are you?
Neela: Good. How are you?
Ray: I'm good. I have another conference today. In Pittsburgh this time. Why do they have to scatter these meetings all over? My flight is leaving at 12. I have to pack, I'll call you when I land.
She looked at the clock, it was 8:30.
Neela: Ok, I'll talk to you then.
Neela got out of bed and got ready for work. She had to be on at 10. She walked in. She would tell Banfield of her departure when she saw her. She walked up to the admit desk and saw Morris and Frank standing there.
Morris: Hey Neela, there's a patient in trauma one, just had an MI. His tests show he has a murmur and needs to have surgery.
Neela: Ok I'll take him up.
It looked like it was going to be a normal day. Neela eventually did run into Banfield and told her about her offer. Banfield expressed her congratulations and that she would be missed. Neela walked back down to the ER and noticed that everyone at the admit desk was watching television.
Neela: What is it?
Chuny: A plane crash. Just outside of Tennessee.
Reporter: 27 are now reported dead and the rest are in critical condition. The cause of the crash was on account of one of the engines failing. The flight left out of Baton Rouge and was supposed to land in Pennsylvania. The plane...
Neela couldn't believe her ears. Her chest felt heavy and found it hard to breath.
Neela: Oh my god.
She rushed to the doctor's lounge and went to her locker and got her purse. She pulled her phone out and started calling Ray, it went to voicemail: 'Hey this is Ray, leave me a message and I'll call you back'. Neela started to cry as she tried repeatedly to call Ray but was not answering his phone. She couldn't believe this was happening. She walked out of the doctor's lounge and didn't hear anything anyone was saying to her. She walked passed the admit desk and saw Banfield. Neela is still crying when she takes Banfield aside.
Neela: I have to leave.
Banfield: You're on until 7, we need you.
Neela: No, I have to go now. It's an emergency.
Banfield: What is it?
Neela: One of my friends may have just died. Please?
Banfield: I'll get someone to cover your shift.
Neela: Thank you.
Neela got her things and rushed out of the hospital. She grabbed a cab and rushed over to the airport. She walked up to the lady behind the counter. She asked her 'Where to?'.
Neela: Baton Rouge.
Phew fanfic's aren't as easy to write as it looks. All of you other people on here that write your stories have my appreciation and respect. I really mean that. Chapter 3 may take me a while longer because I have a lot of ground to cover.
